Now I know there are lots of students out there that progress without a plan. But remember that a person without a plan is like a boat without a sail. Don’t just study whatever you like. Have a plan and build it. 

When I say a study schedule, I don’t mean that you need to plan the whole month or so. You can plan weekly about the things you are going to study. Make sure to keep the study schedule realistic and don’t put enough burden on your shoulders. Also, if you cannot follow the schedule for some reason, make sure to update it and finish the week’s topics by putting in some extra hours. Creating a study schedule will help you avoid studying long hours, and you can easily divide the stress throughout the week. Remember that it is more important to study consistently than studying long hours

Now that you have a complete schedule, you need to hunt to find study resources. If your class lectures are enough, then that is okay. But if not, make a list of all the things that you might need.  

Notes, model tests, video lectures, collect everything that might help you in exams. Collecting the resources even before starting to prepare for the exam is going to help you a lot. It is because you do not have to start searching for resources every time you sit down to study. It will help you to save a lot of time too. 

Prepare a good study space:

Students become stressed when they are studying for exams. They tend to avoid arranging the desk and are likely to start studying in a cluttered environment. This can hamper your productivity, and you might also lose stuff in a mess. 

Losing things and also finding them is going to eat up a lot of your time. So before starting a study session, prepare the study space in the right way. Create a perfect study space that keeps you motivated and productive. This might be a simple change to your surroundings, but it can make a whole lot of difference in your study moods.

Before you start studying for an exam, there are still many things you would like to be clear about. You would want to be familiar with the exam and its topics. Do not start studying and think that you are going to figure it out as you progress. It is essential to know the answers to these questions because the answers will influence the way you should be learning. 

Here are some questions that you need to ask yourself:

  • What are the topics for the test in this exam?
  • Will there be any review class?
  • What is the format of the exam? Multiple choice or short answers?
  • How many marks does the whole exam carry?
  • Do I have all the resources I need?
  • What are the most important 20% topics for this exam? 
  • Is there anything else that I need to know from my teachers? 

The Best study Flow

Everyone has their own studying style and flow. No matter how you study, it is recommended that you do no use passive studying methods like note-taking, highlighting, or re-reading when you are studying for an important exam. 

Instead, use a combination of active studying techniques that help you remember information better. These active techniques are also better at efficiency, i.e., that it takes less time to study with them. 

Here is how I tend to do it when I am studying for exams:

  • First understanding the topic with some video lectures
  • Brainstorming and connecting my previous knowledge to the newly acquired information.
  • Making a mindmap on a paper or using a note-taking app. ( Don’t take notes, create mindmaps)
  • Make a deck of flashcards on Anki ( If your exam is too close, you can look for pre-built decks or decks that your friends have built)
  • Study flashcards. 
  • After finishing your studies, start explaining it to your friends who are also preparing for the exam. 

If you follow these steps for studying, I’m sure your studying will be much more effective, and it will help you learn better and understand too. 

Tips on how to study for exams

The Art of Spaced repetition

Spaced repetition is one of the best ways to retain information for the long term. According to the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve, we tend to forget about 70% of the information learned within 24 hours. So if you want to remember better, you need to revise.

Here are some ways you can revise :

  • Physical Flashcards
  • Using Anki
  • Reviewing the summary of the chapters.
  • Going through model tests and checking if you remember the information
  • Previously made notes.

It would be best if you understood that it is more efficient to revise a chapter 3 times than studying the chapter for 3 hours more. In simple words, revision is better than studying hard on a single topic. When you plan your study schedule, you should also plan revisions and their intervals. 

Have the Guts to Say No

Even when your exams are approaching, you will have other commitments to your friends, family, and others. If you are serious about putting good scores on your mark sheet, apart from studying, you need to stop wasting time on things that matter less for the moment.

You can always enjoy yourself after the exam. Say No to video games, hangouts, parties for two weeks before the exam. Keep your schedule flexible for resting or in case anything emergency comes up. Don’t spend your time doing things that you can always do later on.

When you are studying the subject for too long, you may be starting to feel monotonous. It is going to make you feel bored and exhausted. Rather than studying the same subject for a long time, switch it up.I recommend that you don’t study a single topic for more than 2 hours. 

It would help if you also did this for your studying style and space. If you think you have studied for a long time in your own study space, go to a library or a cafe for a change of scenario. This can really help you to restore your motivation and also remove the boredom. 

Taking productive breaks

There are usually two kinds of students when it comes to taking breaks while studying for exams. 

Type 1: These people take breaks and start scrolling through social media. They get distracted and start to procrastinate on their studies.

Type 2: These students do not take any breaks. They keep on grinding until they get drained. 

You shouldn’t be any of these two classes of people. You need to take breaks; no doubt that. You are not a robot, and every once in a while, you need to get off your table and have time off. But make sure your 5 -minute break does not turn into a 2 hours episode of procrastination

Things you should do during breaks:

  • Have a short walk. 
  • Have a small talk with your friends and family ( Don’t text anyone, if you feel like talking to a specific friend, call them)
  • IF you are hungry, take a small meal break. Do not study after heavy meals. You are likely to feel a little tired during that time. 

Sleep matters!

One of the things students so often get wrong is their sleep schedule while an exam is approaching. Sleep is fundamental for keeping your brain at the peak of cognitive performance. When we sleep, all the information learned throughout the day becomes consolidated. This is an essential step in-memory processing. 

If memory is not consolidated, it is going to fade out very soon. Sleep-deprived people are going to experience memory loss as well as decreased ability to focus. People with sleep loss will also face anxiety and depression. These issues can hamper your studying and mental health, especially during exam season. So it would be best if you got enough sound sleep, at least 6-8 hours every single night.

It depends on you and also the exam. If an exam is tough (>50% pass rate ), you can start 3,6 or even 9 months before. If it is easier (< 50% pass rate), you have a little more breathing space and can start 1 month before. However, remember that there is no problem if you start studying early, but there is definitely a problem if you cannot study everything due to lack of enough time
